Marina Tavares – Como a música chegou a sua vida?

Regan – Quando era muito novo, talvez aos cinco anos, eu estava em um restaurante com meus pais, na Cidade do Cabo – onde nasci e cresci – e lá estava um trio tocando jazz. Eles tocaram “Garota de Ipanema”, e eu assisti pasmo, ao ver e ouvir que o som de cada um dos músicos se juntavam e criavam um som único, aquela canção. Daquele momento em diante, a música era uma coisa mágica em minha vida, e eu me apaixonei. Eu tive a sorte em ter pais que amam a música, e minha mãe sempre teve instrumentos musicais em casa. Meus tios eram músicos, e eles enchiam a minha cabeça e do meu irmão com música. Muito funk e jazz eram tocados, enquanto meu pai colocava músicas dos Beatles, e Rock and Roll dos anos 50 e 60.

Marina Tavares – Quando foi a sua primeira festa de música eletrônica?

Regan – No final de 1993, eu estava terminando a escola e saindo com meus amigos. Naquela época, eu estava ouvindo música industrial, e tinha um clube na Cidade do Cabo chamado Playground. Era o melhor lugar da cidade para ouvir aquele estilo musical, lá também tinha outro ambiente chamado ‘Deviate’, que foi uma das primeiras raves em clubes da cidade. Uma noite, nos aventuramos subindo as escadas, e conferindo o que estava acontecendo lá em cima. Nós fomos para uma sala cheia de pessoas usando preto, e a música estava realmente pesada, em um mundo cheio de cor e grandes frequências de baixo, isso foi um mundo novo e brilhante! O DJ estava tocando uma track do Prodigy, e eu pulei em direção a pista de dança e nunca mais saí. (Eu acho que Prodigy foi o projeto que levou muitas pessoas do rock e música industrial para a música dance daquela época.)

Marina Tavares – Fale-me sobre o início da sua carreira.

Regan – Aos 15 anos, eu comecei tocando guitarra em bandas de Psychedelic rock, grunge e jazz. Meus pais me deixava junto com meus irmãos e colegas da banda nos clubes que não tínhamos idade o bastante nem para entrar, mas podíamos porque estávamos tocando lá! Os meus pais sempre apoiaram as minhas escolhas musicais, na verdade eles não tinham escolha, era claro que música era a única coisa que meu irmão e eu estávamos interessados. Quanto terminei o colegial, entrei de cabeça na música dance e eletrônica, e rapidamente comecei a tocar. Eu estava colecionando tanta música para ouvir, que então comecei a tocar na estação de rádio da Universidade da Cidade do Cabo – onde eu estudava – e logo fui chamado para apresentar um programa semanal na estação. Eu trabalhei lá por cinco anos, e dividi muita música com pessoas que nunca tinham ouvido nada como aquilo antes. Na mesma época, eu era estudante e comecei a fazer as minhas próprias festas, tocando em eventos pequenos, ajudando os grandes eventos, e então comecei a trabalhar na EMI Records. Durante esse tempo, eu aprendi muito sobre muitas áreas da indústria da música. Por volta de 1998, eu comecei a tocar muito e também a escrever trance e Techno com meu companheiro de estúdio, Ans. Juntos, nós tocamos noite após noite, e depois de alguns anos, nós decidimos começar a nossa própria gravadora, e no ano 2000 a Nano Records nasceu!

Marina Tavares – Quais são as suas influências musicais?

Regan – São tantas. Quando eu era adolescente, ouvia tanta música. O meu trio sagrado era Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, e Herbie Hancock (e provavelmente, para ser honesto, Stevie Ray Vaughan iria fazer um ‘quarteto sagrado’). Eu explorei tantos estilos musicais, e ainda faço isso, estou sempre procurando por novos sons, é um vício para o resto da vida que estou feliz em ter. Quando se trata de Psychedelic Trace e música eletrônica, algumas das minhas maiores influências e favoritos são agora meus amigos. Tristan e Dickster são amigos muito próximos, e também artistas da minha gravadora, a Nano Records, ambos foram grandes influências para mim ao longo dos anos, a música deles é parte do que me inspirou a ter a minha gravadora, e agora eles são parte disso. É louco olhar para trás e ver o quão longe chegamos. Também, eu tenho que mencionar todos os artistas de Goa Trance dos anos 90, e gravadoras, como Flying Rhino, Blue Room Released, TIP, Twisted, Matsuri. Essas gravadoras preenchiam a minha alma com tanta música boa.

Marina Tavares – Quais são os seus três álbuns favoritos de todos os tempos?

Marina Tavares – Fale-me um pouco sobre a Nano Records.

Regan – Nano Records é minha paixão. É um jeito de criar uma família musical, e também dizer as pessoas ao redor do mundo para ouvirem a música que amo, como se eu estivesse gritando: “Oi pessoal! Confira esta música, vocês tem que ouvir, é tão boa!!!” Nós temos muita sorte em ter os melhores (e maiores) projetos de Psychedelic Trance do planeta em nossa gravadora. O nosso foco é lançar o máximo possível das melhores músicas psicodélicas para pista de dança, e alcançar com elas o máximo de ouvidos e pés que pudermos. Nós temos desde Full-on Psychedelic Trance até coisas mais profundas, sérias, lentas, e estilos modernos também. Se for música boa e psicodélica para curtir, nós estamos dentro!

Marina Tavares – Como foi tocar no Soulvision Festival?

Regan – Foi um ótimo set, que eu realmente gostei. A duração foi um pouco curta para mim, prefiro sets longos, então eu apenas cheguei e agitei, e ficou um pouco mais profundo no final. De qualquer jeito, a resposta foi ótima e eu me diverti muito, a energia foi incrível!

Marina Tavares – Onde foi a apresentação que mais te marcou?

Regan – O meu melhor set até agora, provavelmente foi por volta do ano 2000, em um pequeno armazén para 400 pessoas, eu estava tão conectado com a minha música, e toquei por horas e horas. Todo mundo estava na mesma vibração; foi como parar no tempo. Aquela foi uma grande noite – eu também acho que aquela foi a noite que eu e minha mulher tivemos uma conexão real, então por essa razão também. Dois outros grandes sets para mim foram quando toquei no Boom e Ozora. Eu toquei um dos sets de encerramento no Boom, em 2012, e tive que tocar depois dos projetos da Nano Records, que foram com tudo! Sem pressão. Eu acertei em cheio, foi uma corrida contra o tempo. Então, teve também a abertura do Ozora, em 2015. Uau!!! Essa foi provavelmente a maior energia que eu já presenciei vindo de uma pista de dança, foi uma loucura! Eu senti como se estivesse pegando uma grande onda, e abraçando a vida, me certificando que todo mundo sentisse a música como precisava. Todos foram momentos especiais, todos foram momentos diferentes.

Marina Tavares – O que mantém vivo o seu amor pela música eletrônica? O que você ama nos festivais de Psychedelic Trance?

Regan – Quando se trata de música, eu apenas amo. Música é o meu caso de amor, eu irei sempre ser seduzido por ela. Existem infinitas músicas incríveis sendo criadas, e eu amo procurar e achar elas. Como em festivais de Psychedelic Trance, para mim, eles são a melhor forma no planeta de estarmos juntos em paz, em grandes grupos de pessoas, interagindo umas com as outras, com a música e natureza. Pessoas do bem, música boa, o que mais nós podemos pedir?

Marina Tavares – Vamos finalizar com uma mensagem para os seus fãs.

Regan – Sigam os seus sonhos, apoiem as coisas que vocês amam, e andem em paz nessa Terra, é a única que nós temos.

Marina Tavares – How did music arrive in your life?

Regan – When I was very young, maybe 5 years old, I was in a restaurant with my parents in Cape Town, South Africa – where I was born & grew up – and there was a small trio playing jazz. They played ‘Girl from Ipanema’ and I watched in amazement as I saw and heard each musician’s sounds join with each other and create a unified sound, the song. From that moment on, music was the most magical thing in my life, and I fell in love with music. I was lucky to have parents that love music and my mother always had musical instruments in the house. My uncles were musicians and big music fans too, and they filled my brother and my heads with music. There was a lot of funk and jazz being played, while my father played us the Beatles and 50’s and 60’s Rock and Roll.

Marina Tavares – When was your first electronic music party?

Regan – In late 1993 I was just finishing school and I was out clubbing with friends. At that time I was really into industrial music and there was a club in Cape Town called the Playground. It was the best place in town to hear that kind of music, but it also had another room upstairs called ‘Deviate’, and it was one of the first rave clubs in town. One night we ventured upstairs to check out what was going on up there. We came from a room that was full of people dressed in black and the music being really heavy into a world of color and huge slabs of bass frequencies, it was a bright new world! The DJ played a Prodigy track, and I jumped onto the dance floor and have never left. (I think Prodigy was the crossover act for many people to move from rock and industrial to dance music back then too.)

Marina Tavares – Tell me about the beginning of your career.

Regan – I started out playing guitar in Psychedelic rock, grunge and jazz bands when I was about 15. My parents would drop myself and my brother and our band mates off at clubs we weren’t old enough to be in, but we were allowed in because we were performing there! My folks have always been very supportive of my musical choices, they had no choice really, it was clear that music was all that my brother and I were interested in. Once I finished school and got deep into electronic and dance music I quickly got into DJing. I was collecting so much music to listen to, and then started to DJ on the radio station of the University of Cape Town – where I was studying – and then was asked to host a weekly dance music show on the station. I did that show for 5 years and got to share a lot of music with people that had never heard anything like that before. At the same time I was a student I started to make my own parties, DJing at small events, helping out at bigger events and then had a part time job working for EMI Records. I learnt a lot during those times about so many different areas of the music industry. Around 1998 I started DJing a lot and also writing trance and techno with my studio and DJ partner, Ans. Together we played a lot, night after night and then after a few crazy years we decided to start our own record label, and in 2000 Nano Records was born!

Marina Tavares – What are your musical influences?

Regan – So much. As a teenager I listened to so much music. My holy trinity is Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa and Herbie Hancock (and probably, if I’m honest, Stevie Ray Vaughan, will make it a ‘holy four’.) I explored so many different kinds of music and still do, I’m always looking for new sounds, and it’s a lifelong addiction I’m happy to have. When it comes to Psytrance and electronic music some of my biggest influences and favorites are now friends of mine. Tristan and Dickster are both very close friends and artists on my record label, Nano Records, both these guys were huge influences on me over the years too, their music is part of what inspired me to have a record label, and now they are part of that. It’s mad to look back and see how far we have come. Also I have to give a nod to all the mid-to-late nineties Goa trance artists and record labels, like Flying Rhino, Blue Room Released, TIP, Twisted, Matsuri. Man… those labels just filled my soul with so much good music.

Marina Tavares – What are your favorite 3 albums of all time?

Marina Tavares – Tell me a little bit about Nano Records.

Regan – Nano Records is my passion. It’s a way of creating a musical family and a way of telling people around the world to listen to music that I love, like I’m shouting: “Hey guys! Check this music out, you have to listen to it, is sooooo good!!!”. We are very lucky to have some of the best (and biggest) Psytrance acts on the planet on the label. Our focus is to release the best psychedelic dance floor music possible and get that music to as many ears and feet as possible. We cover everything from Full-on Psytrance blasting to deeper, darker, slower, and groovier styles too. If it’s good Psychedelic party music we are in!

Marina Tavares – How was it playing at Soulvision Festival?

Regan – I had a great set, I really enjoyed it. The set length was quite short for me, I prefer longer sets, so I just stepped up and smashed it, then took things a little deeper near the end. Either way the response was great and I had a lot of fun, there was a great vibe!

Marina Tavares – Where was your most remarkable presentation?

Regan – My best set ever, so far, was probably around the middle of 2000 in a small warehouse in Cape Town to 400 people, I was so deep into my music and played for hours and hours. Everyone there was on the same vibration; it was like time stood still. That was a super special night – also I think that was the night my wife and I first made a real connection, so that’s part of the reason too. Two other massive sets for me were at Boom and Ozora. I played one of the closing sets at Boom in 2012 and had to play after a day Nano acts, which all slammed it!!! No pressure. But I nailed it, which was a rush. Then there was the opening DJ set at Ozora in 2015. Wow!!! That was probably the biggest energy I have ever experienced coming from a dance floor, it was insane!!! I felt like I was riding a massive wave, and was just holding on for dear life, making sure everyone got the musical kick they needed. Special times all of them, all of them different.

Marina Tavares – What keeps alive your love for electronic music? What do you love about the Psytrance festivals?

Regan – When it comes to music, I just love it.  Music is a love affair I will always be seduced by. There is a never ending stream of amazing music being created and I love searching and finding it. As for Psytrance festivals, for me, they are just the best way on the planet to come together peacefully in large groups of people and interact with each other, music and nature. Good people, good music, good places, what more could anyone ask for!?
