Marina – Quando foi o seu primeiro contato com a música eletrônica e como isso se tornou algo especial em sua vida?
DJ Lucas – Olá todo mundo! Tudo começou quando eu era um garoto, e fiquei fascinado com Hip-Hop. Eu estava ouvindo Old School Electro, e fui fisgado por Breakdance também… Antes disso, eu amava os discos da minha mãe, especialmente os produzidos por Giorgio Moroder. Eu também estava hipnotizado pelo som eletrônico de Kraftwerk, Yello e Brian Eno. Nós vamos voltar um pouquinho agora… Isso se tornou algo especial em minha vida quando eu tinha 15 anos, e comecei a tocar em festas de amigos… Graças a alguns amigos antigos da escola, que abriram uma loja de discos em Londres, eu comecei a ficar envolvido em clubes e festas undergrounds, e comecei a tocar…
Marina – Quais são os projetos que inspiram você?
DJ Lucas – Um dos primeiros discos que eu tive foi “Magic Fly” de um francês chamado “Space”. Eu estava totalmente fascinado pelo groove e pelo trance, que me colocaram dentro disso. Este vídeo tem a banda tocando instrumentos, todos vestidos em ternos espaciais… Você pode ver de onde o Daft Punk tirou essa ideia!
Eu sempre fui fã da música psicodélica em geral… Nos meus tempos de escola, eu aprendi a tocar guitarra e piano. Eu conheci a música do The Doors, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, e o meu favorito, Jimi Hendrix! Eu ainda ouço Jimi Hendrix o tempo inteiro, e constantemente me inspiro nele.
Quando eu ouvi pela primeira vez o Trance Psicodélico, no início dos anos 90, os artistas eram The Infinity Project, Hallucinogen, Juno Reactor, Eat Static, Total Eclipse, Man With No Name, Metal Spark, X-Dream, Etnica, e Koxbox. Eles me inspiravam, e me faziam dançar a noite inteira.
Marina – Entre tantos estilos, por que você escolheu o Psychedelic Trance?
DJ Lucas – Eu sempre amei música dance em geral, seja Old School, Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk, Rare, Groove, Disco, House, Techno, ou Drum N’ Bass. Eu fui um DJ de Techno por muitos anos, antes de encontrar o Psychedelic Trance… Atualmente, isso era a mistura entre Techno, que estava tocando no início dos anos 90, e o som que estava começando em Goa, que me influenciou a começar a tocar em festas de Psychedelic Trance… A primeira festa que eu toquei foi da TIP Records, e eu estava emocionado quando Raja Ram veio até mim no final do meu set, e me chamou para voltar e tocar na próxima festa… Eu também percebi que as festas de Psychedelic Trance pareciam ter energias mais amigáveis, melhor decoração, locais exóticos, e garotas bonitas. Isso pode ter algo a ver com isso!
Marina – Quais são as suas paixões na vida, além da música?
DJ Lucas – Comida, viajar, surfar, e amor!
Marina – Como é fazer parte da TIP Records, e trabalhar com tantos grandes nomes da música eletrônica?
DJ Lucas – É uma alegria e um privilégio! Eu tenho tido a boa sorte de trabalhar com os melhores dinossauros da música eletrônica… Eu comecei a produzir Psychedelic Trance um pouco tarde, aos 20 anos, parte porque eu estava tocando DJ set. Eu tive a grande vantagem de trabalhar com os melhores produtores de Londres, Dick Trevor, Simon Posford, Merv Pepler, e Tristan, antes de lançar o meu primeiro álbum de colaborações, chamado “God Save The Machine”, em 2006. Como poderia se esperar, aprendi com conselho e técnicas, que realmente me ajudaram muito!
Nesses tempos turbulentos para a indústria musical, é uma grande conquista para a TIP Records completar 20 anos de existência… Raja Ram é uma pessoa incrível, com uma grande energia e entusiasmo! Eu devo muito a ele, por acreditar e apostar em mim… Nós nos divertimos muito juntos, ele é uma pessoa extraordinária! Quando estamos em turnê, nunca existe um momento de tédio!
Marina – Como foi tocar no Universo Paralello Festival 12?
DJ Lucas – Em uma palavra: incrível! Eu nunca irei me esquecer… Eu tive a honra de tocar naquela manhã mágica de 1° de janeiro! A energia na pista de dança foi elétrica, e é difícil encontrar um lugar mais bonito que a Bahia! Eu senti uma grande conexão com a platéia, sorrisos, muito poder de dança, do jeito que eu gosto… Em minha opinião, o Universo Paralello é definitivamente um dos melhores festivais do mundo!
Marina – Qual é a diferença entre a cena eletrônica em Londres e no Brasil?
DJ Lucas – Bom, o clima tende ser melhor no Brasil, e vocês tem todos esses locais exóticos, mas a energia é ótima em ambos os países… Na minha experiência, as festas são maiores no Brasil, e vocês também tem o açaí, para manter a energia na pista de dança.
Marina – Qual é a historia mais engraçada que já aconteceu em alguma festa?
DJ Lucas – Hum… Existem algumas muito boas para escolher… Uma história divertida, embora nessa época não tenha sido, foi há muitos anos, quando meu agente me chamou para tocar em um clube em Londres… Ele me disse por telefone para estar lá 00:50, faltando dez minutos para uma, e para o meu horror, ele queria dizer que era para estar lá e tocar de 22:00 até 1:00! Eu estava duas horas e cinquenta minutos atrasado, e tinha perdido completamente o meu set… Por sorte, alguém me substituiu, e eu toquei mais tarde. Ops!
Marina – Quando iremos ver você novamente no Brasil?
DJ Lucas – Vocês podem checar a minha página oficial no Facebook, para ficarem atualizados… Mas eu irei voltar ao Brasil este ano, com certeza, provavelmente em Junho. Então comece a misturar as caipirinhas (risos)…
Marina – Você quer deixar uma mensagem para os seus fãs no Brasil?
DJ Lucas – Obrigado por todo o apoio, eu mal posso esperar para voltar no Brasil e festejar novamente com todos vocês… Uma coisa é certa, o Brasil sabe como festejar, pelo visto está no sangue de vocês! Muito obrigado!

Marina Tavares – When was your first contact with electronic music and when it became something special in your life?
DJ Lucas – Hi everyone! It all began when I was a boy when I became fascinated by hip-hop scratch mixing. I was listening to Old School Electro and got into Breakdancing to it! Even before that I loved my mother’s disco records, especially the one’s produced by Giorgio Moroder. I was also capitived by the electronic sounds of Kraftwerk, Yello and Brian Eno… We’re going back a bit now! It became something special in my life when I was 15 years old and I started djing at friends parties. Thanks to some old mates from school who opened up a record shop in London, I started to get involved in the London underground party/club scene and got to play some good gigs.
Marina Tavares – Who are the projects that inspire you?
DJ Lucas – One of the first records I ever owned was ‘Magic Fly’ by a French band called ‘Space’. I was totally captivated by the groove and the trancey-like state that it put me into. The video had the band playing their instruments all dressed up in space suits… You can see where Daft Punk got the idea from!
I’ve always been a huge fan of psychedelic music in general. During my formative years as a young lad learning the guitar and piano I got into the The Doors, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and, my favourite of all, Jimi Hendrix. I still listen to Jimi all the time and am constantly inspired by him.
When I first got into Psychedelic Trance in the early 90’s it was artists such as The Infinity Project, Hallucinogen, Juno Reactor, Eat Static, Total Eclipse, Man With No Name, Metal Spark, X-Dream, Etnica and Koxbox that inspired me and made me dance all night.
Marina Tavares – Between so many styles, why did you chose Psychedelic Trance?
DJ Lucas – I have always loved dance music in general whether it be Old School Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk, Rare Groove, Disco, House, Techno or Drum and Bass. I was a techno DJ for many years before I encountered Psychedelic Trance. Actually it was the crossover between the techno I was playing in the early 90’s with the sound that was being played in Goa back then that led me to start playing at Psytrance parties. The first one I ever played at was a TIP Party and I was thrilled when Raja Ram came up to me at the end of my set and asked me to come and play again at the next one. I also noticed that there seemed to be more friendly vibes, well thought out decoration, exotic locations, and pretty girls at the Psytrance parties.. that might have something to do with it!
Marina Tavares – What are you passionate about in life, besides music?
DJ Lucas – Food, travel, art, surfing and love.
Marina Tavares – How is to be part of the great TIP Records and work with so many big names from electronic music?
DJ Lucas – It is a joy and privilege. I’ve had the good fortune to work with some of the greatest electronic wizards. I was quite late to start producing Psychedelic Trance myself (in my late 20’s), partly because I was djing so much. But I had the great advantage of working with my top UK producer mates such as Dick Trevor, Simon Posford, Merv Pepler and Tristan before releasing my first album of collaborations called ‘God Save The Machine’ in 2006. As you would expect, learning from their advice and techniques really helped me.
In these turbulent times for the music industry it’s a great achievement for TIP Records to be in it’s 20th year of existence… Raja Ram is an amazing person with unusually high energy and enthusiasm. I owe a lot to him for believing in me and championing me. We have a lot of fun together, he’s an extraordinary character… When I’m touring with him there’s never a dull moment!
Marina Tavares – How was it playing at Universo Paralello Festival 12?
DJ Lucas – In a word – amazing! I’ll never forget it. I had the honour of playing on that magical morning of January 1st. The vibe on that dancefloor was electric and it’s hard to beat that location! I felt a great connection with the crowd… Lots of smiling and full power dancing, just how I like it. In my opinion it’s definitely one of the top festivals in the world.
Marina Tavares – What’s the difference between the London and Brazil electronic music scene?
DJ Lucas – Well the weather tends to be better in Brazil and you have all those exotic locations but the vibes are great in both countries. In my experience the parties tend to be bigger in Brazil and you also normally have Acai being sold by the dance floor for keeping the energy levels high!
Marina Tavares – What is your funniest party story?
DJ Lucas – Hmm… there’s quite a few to choose from. One amusing story (although at the time it wasn’t) was many years back when my agent asked me to play at a club in London. He told me on the phone to be there for 10 to 1. I turned up ready to play at 12.50 a.m. (10 minutes to 1 a.m.) only to find out to my horror that he had meant for me to be there to play from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.!!! So I was 2 hours and 50 minutes late and completely missed my set! Luckily someone filled in for me and I played later on… Whoops!
